Consider approval of Resolution 2021-186R, approving an agreement with Staples Furniture Solutions through the Sourcewell Purchasing Cooperative for the purchase of
Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment for the Police Department Renovation Project in the amount of $300,370.71; authorizing the City Manager or his designee to execute the agreement on behalf of the City; and declaring effective date.

Why such expensive chairs and desks for the higher ups, aren't the other chairs/desks good enough for their employees?

Will any of the fixtures/furniture/decorations in the new building have "Thin Blue Line" related symbolism, and can we expect the new building to be devoid of this racist symbol?

Response to CM Baker provided by Chief Standridge:
The furniture that we ordered replaces furniture that has been in use for many years, much of it original to move-in circa 1991. It has far exceeded its expected lifetime. For example, desks that were in use had milk jugs propping up drawers and old computer terminals (towers) being used as missing legs. Many pieces of furniture were pieced together from previous mismatched sets. Chairs were peeling to the point that pieces of the fake leather would adhere to the person sitting in them. Conference room tables were losing pieces literally as we sat at them.

The furniture we ordered comes with a lifetime warranty. Our intention was to be fiscally responsible and order value-priced yet quality furniture that will stand the test of time for all employees.

Only one assistant chief is receiving new furniture due to the fact that his furniture was in such poor condition and situated in a more public setting. The other chiefs have opted to keep what they have to allow the budget to stretch further for others. As for the chairs, everyone with a desk, from clerical to administration, is getting the same chair. The only chairs that are different are based on task or intended use, such as conference room, training or dispatch. Some chairs will have arms; some will not have arms (due to gun belts).

There is one back hallway, not being touched in renovation, that is receiving the best leftover furniture that we could cull from the project. We will attempt to replace that furniture in the next budget year as funds are available, or if there are funds left over at the end of the project.

I am not aware of any office furniture-makers who include the blue line in their materials, and certainly not Staples. We are not ordering any custom made furniture like other departments that include logos of any kind. As for the last statement, our City Manager has already addressed this on numerous occasions.

Thank you.
